A Few of My Favorite SEO Beginner Courses

For the first time in my career, I’m going through the process of hiring an additional team member. It’s interesting, strange, and insightful.

Some candidates, as always, fit in both skills and team dynamics more than others. It’s how the hiring process goes.

What no one told me was how hard it would be to choose, especially when you like so many of them.

Several of the standout candidates had certain things in common. The candidates who really impressed me were the ones eager to improve before ever being hired.

Anyone in SEO knows we’re always learning. We’re always changing. We’re always adapting with the next core update.

But we all have to start somewhere.

The Beginning Of My SEO Journey

A mountain background during sunset with the words Start, Success, and SEO is an adventure

I was thrown into the world of SEO during my first website content editor position. I had no idea what, who, when, where, or why. I went from someone thinking they were going to write recipe descriptions and blogs about food to finding out all about Google, rankings, and the need to create optimized content for the audience.

Cue following down the SEO and Content Marketing rabbit hole. And boy oh boy, is that never ending!

Courses have changed over time, and I tend to take beginner SEO and Content Strategy courses just as refreshers.

But, if you’re just starting out, here’s what I recommend.

The Best (In My Opinion) SEO Courses For Beginners

Hubspot offers a variety of free, informative courses that can help advance your knowledge and action plans. It’s a great place for anyone to start. I also recommend checking out their entire library.

Semrush also has an academy that offers a variety of free courses. I took the Content-Led SEO course and learned a few new tricks. This is a great course for beginner and senior SEOs.

It’s a pricy course, but well worth it. It’s a deep dive into competitor research, which allows you to strengthen your SEO strategy. It’s a great way to learn how to analyze the SERPs (search engine results page) and even learn about off-page activity.

SEO is more than just keyword research and making sure those keywords are on the page. It’s a continuous journey. Forever learners and naturally curious personalities make great SEOs. As soon as you’ve got your strategy going, Google will come along with a change or core update that will put you right back at the drawing board.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed. Just make sure to take a second and breathe. One course at a time. Apply what you learn.

And don’t feel like you have to learn it all in one day. I promise, by next week, several things could change.
